Introduction to Best Teas for Weight Loss
Drinking tea might be one of the best ways to naturally boost your weight loss. I’ve experienced it greatly myself and have been really wanting to share what it is like.
Can Tea Help You Lose Weight?
So the first question you might be asking would be, “Can tea really help me to lose weight?” And the answer to that is yes, absolutely!
I am not promising you a magical potion that can make you have the perfect body in your head. (If something or someone promises you that, run!) But there exists evidence-based, scientific research on some of the teas that are proven to have some effects in losing weight.
Here are some of the ways that tea can help you lose weight. All the tea I am going to tell you about soon will have many of these effects in one tea.
- Boosting metabolism & burning fat faster: Drink the tea after a meal and before you exercise.
- Hinders fat absorption: If you are having a fatty meal, drink the tea before & after.
- Suppress appetite & cravings: Perfect for everyday drink!
- Improve overall health: Also great for everyday drinks. When you are healthy, your body wants to go back to its natural state.
Tea Can Help You Better
These are the four main effects that drinking tea can help you with. This will have an even greater effect on your body if you replace one of the teas with high-calorie beverages like soda or milkshakes. Also, some of you might not be drinking water so often. In that case, consciously trying to drink these teas would certainly help you with your weight loss!

7 Best Teas for Weight Loss | How I Drink in My Everyday Life
Here are some of my best teas to drink for weight loss!

1. Green Tea: The Metabolism Powerhouse
According to the study Green tea for weight loss and weight maintenance in overweight or obese adults, here are some of the ways green tea can help you lose weight!
- Contains catechins (a type of polyphenol found in tea and wine) increase fat oxidation and resting metabolic rate
- A moderate amount of caffeine in green tea increases energy metabolism, which leads to weight loss
So basically, green tea increases our metabolism and burns fat!
You can also watch this video from Nutrition Facts, and it says green tea helps protect against DNA damage. That means it is anti-aging!

How I drink it: I love drinking this in the morning for an energy boost. It doesn’t change the color of my teeth like coffee and has a mild caffeine content, just enough for me. If you are sensitive to caffeine like I am, then a few cups of green tea in the morning would be perfect!
Also, green tea is one of the ingredients to improve skin health. Green tea can help you lose weight and improve skin health; therefore, it is the tea for beautiful people like you. 😉 If you want to learn more about it, I have an article about the 3 natural foods for healthy skin.

2. Black Tea: The Fat Blocker
There are several studies that show that black tea inhibits weight gain, including a Review on the Weight-Loss Effects of Oxidized Tea Polyphenols.
- Polyphenols such as theaflavins in black tea block fat absorption
- Boosts AMPK, which is a key molecule that moderates energy metabolism
- Black tea has a higher amount of caffeine than green tea, which increases metabolism
How I drink it: Black tea at an afternoon tea party, anyone? It is one of my favorite activities to do with my girlfriends—just chatting with a warm cup of black tea and enjoying delicious sandwiches, scones, and sweets. And the black tea is perfect for that, as it blocks the fats we consume through the afternoon tea party sweets. Sweets and black tea are a perfect combination; not only does it taste amazing, but it also helps us manage weight.

3. Oolong Tea: The Fat-burner
It’s a little funny to introduce green tea, black tea, and oolong tea as the first three teas to lose weight, as they are from the leaves of the tea plant. They are different in the way they process the tea leaves. Oolong tea is traditionally produced in China and Taiwan. It is partially oxidized and has a rich and woody flavor with a floral scent.
- Oolong tea boosted fat burning by up to 12% over 24 hours
- Caffeine and other antioxidants found in Oolong tea may help you feel full longer (appetite control)

Drink Oolong tea when you are having some Chinese food, especially if the food is greasy!
How I drink it: I got a very good Oolong tea from my friend who traveled to Taiwan. I never knew that just oolong tea could smell so floral and wonderful! And as it is from Taiwan, the oolong tea goes so well with Taiwanese or Chinese dishes. I love Chinese dishes, but sometimes they can feel a bit heavy with oil. (Many dishes involve frying food.) It is also part of the Taiwanese and Chinese culture to drink Oolong tea after a meal, so we are enjoying the culinary culture and health benefits in one!

4. Rooibos: Appetite-Curver
Rooibos, also called red tea, is a South African herbal tea with lots of health benefits! It is a naturally caffeine-free tea with a vibrant red color and a sweet, earthy flavor.
According to the study called The Health Benefits of Rooibos tea in Humans,
- Have anti-aging properties
- Regulates appetite
- Improved insulin sensitivity
How I drink it: As rooibos tea is a great herbal tea without any caffeine, it makes the perfect evening tea to drink. After dinner, I like to make a hot cup of rooibos tea in the evening. It keeps me full, warm, and nice throughout the night. Especially in the winter, this cold weather keeps us feeling hungry even when we are not! I live in Norway, where the winter is long, so I feel that often. A cup of rooibos tea is perfect for those nights.
Also, one thing to note is that drinking four cups (500 ml/ 16.9 oz) did not guarantee the health benefits, only the periodic consumption! So it’s a good thing that I like to drink rooibos tea now and then. It maximizes the benefits I get from the rooibos! I hope you do the same.

I used to like making tea with loose rooibos tea leaves, but the rooibos tea leaves are so fine that it became cumbersome to clean the tea leaves afterwards. So now I like to use rooibos tea bags.

5. Hibiscus: Antioxidant Powerhouse
Hibiscus tea has a gorgeous ruby-like deep red color and tangy berry flavor. Anthocyanins and other antioxidants in hibiscus make it hard for the body to store fat. In an intervention study, a cup of hibiscus and lemon verbena tea made the participants lose 1-2 pounds for 2 months! You can learn more about it in the video below.
- Fat-blocking effect
- One of the most antioxidant-rich tea types in the world
How I drink it: Hibiscus tea is so fresh, sour, and slightly tart. Iced hibiscus tea is so good on summer days. I like to cold brew it overnight and mix it with some sweetener. If you want to take the hibiscus tea to the next level, you can mix it with some carbonated water. It’s so delicious, and it tastes almost like a soda!
I like drinking: EarthWise Aromatics Organic Hibiscus Flowers
These hibiscus flowers are in whole flowers, but no worries! It’s easy to steep and clean the hibiscus flowers after brewing. These are organic flowers that are in sealed packaging, so I recommend these hibiscus flowers.

6. Ginger Tea: Anti-Inflammatory Boost for Flat Stomach
Ginger tea has been used as a medicine around the world for almost 5000 years, and for a good reason. Ginger tea is so effective that it has been put to the test in a diabetic diet. Also, in other studies, just less than a teaspoon of ginger powder for three months has been proven to have these effects:
- Lower blood sugar levels
- Improve long-term blood sugar control
- Reduced body mass index

In Korea, we enjoy drinking hot ginger tea mixed with some acacia honey in the winter. It’s great for the cold, especially if you have a sore throat.
How I drink it: Ginger tea is a popular drink all over the world. In Korea, we like to drink ginger tea hot with some honey when someone catches a cold. I like to mix a bit of ginger powder with some hot water and date syrup. It feels so comforting, and it works so well, especially when your throat hurts.
I like drinking: Traditional Medicinal Organic Ginger Tea, 16 bags
I look for ginger tea almost only when I am sick, and having tea bags lying around at home is perfect for me.

7. Peppermint Tea: Appetite Control & Comfort
Interestingly enough, according to a study on the effects of peppermint, eating peppermint can improve athletic performance. What’s more, just the scent alone can boost that, too!
- Improve athletic performance
- Boost mood
So if you like working out or want to work out to lose weight, a cup of peppermint tea could be a great choice for you.

Have you had fresh mint tea picked from the garden? The tea tastes so fresh.
How I drink it: Sometimes I am lucky to receive some fresh peppermint from my friends who have gardens. It’s a luxury to grow fresh herbs in your garden! My favorite way to drink peppermint tea is to actually use fresh peppermint leaves and directly pour hot water into them. But that’s not always possible. In that case, I like to buy peppermint tea bags and drink them. I also like to freeze some mint leaves and make tea directly from them.

Final Suggestion: Drink Water Too!
I hope you enjoyed reading this blog post about the best teas for weight loss. One might think drinking tea won’t do anything, but in fact, a little bit of change in your daily life makes a huge difference. As I read the papers on the effects of ground ginger, 1 teaspoon of ground ginger was not enough to show a huge difference. But less than a teaspoon of ground ginger powder was shown to reduce BMI (body mass index). A cup of different teas like these in everyday life is a great way to lose weight healthily and sustainably! Even when you change nothing about your lifestyle, just drinking these teas alone affects your body weight. That’s the amazing part.
Last but not least, I want to finish off this blog post by encouraging you to drink pure water too. I am talking to myself about this as well, because I am not good at drinking water. I can drink tea, drinks, and coffee all day, but drinking pure water can feel boring. But our bodies need water even after drinking lots of tea and coffee. But fear you not, drinking enough water and keeping yourself hydrated is also a great weight-management method. Our bodies think we are hungry when we are thirsty, making us eat more. It is therefore very important to stay hydrated with water and drink the recommended tea above once a day.
Then I’ll see you next time!
