That’s how I am with sweet potatoes recently, as they are healthy, sweet, and creamy, making them a very versatile ingredient. I shared sweet potato recipes, from drinks like a latté or a smoothie to a salad and dumplings. As I learn more about cooking, I feel like there are endless recipes in the world, and so are the sweet potato recipes. So yet again, I am here with another sweet potato recipe—a sweet potato jam recipe!

Introduction to Korean Sweet Potato Jam Recipe

As shared in my article Easy Korean Cheese Corn Sweet Potato Dumpling Recipe, this is a recipe shared by a Korean celebrity, Jung Sang-hoon (정상훈) on the TV program Fun-Straurant in 2023.

Here’s the clip from the Fun-Straurant that inspired me, thanks to Sang-hoon.

He is known for many delicious recipes for kids, and this Korean sweet potato jam is one of them. It can be used for many recipes, making this jam versatile. He didn’t give us specific measurements in the video; he just said, “Use a big sweet potato” or “pour milk until the sweet potato is submerged.”

So here I am, I tried this recipe a few times and will give you the specific measurement so you don’t have to do the guesswork. 😄

💡 Fun Fact: There is a Philipino sweet potato jam made with purple sweet potatoes called ube halaya (or halayang ube).

Different Kinds of Sweet Potatoes

I love sweet potatoes, even all the different kinds of sweet potatoes! In Korea alone, there are many kinds of sweet potatoes with yellow flesh. But let’s not get into that for now. I just want to show you three main different sweet potatoes. You could make this sweet potato jam with them all, although the original recipe calls for the yellow flesh sweet potatoes.

Here are three types of sweet potatoes: orange on the left, purple on the top, and yellow on the right bottom.

  • Orange sweet potato: It is moist and sweet with bright orange flesh.
  • Yellow sweet potato: Mildly sweet, earthy, and nutty flavor. Dry and starchy flesh with a light yellow color.
  • Purple sweet potatoes: Dense and very creamy with a rich flavor and sweetness.

Ingredients for the Korean Sweet Potato Jam

Here is the list of main ingredients for the sweet potato jam.

  • Sweet potato: Any kind would work, but the original recipe calls for Korean/Japanese sweet potatoes with yellow flesh.
  • Milk
  • Butter
  • Condensed Milk
  • Cinnamon powder

For milk, butter, and condensed milk, I chose plant-based products. I use oat milk for the recipe. For condensed milk, I also use sweetened condensed oatmilk from Nature’s Charm. Not only do these taste great, but they are also easy on my stomach. These are also great alternatives to try if you are lactose-intolerant.

There are some other ingredients in the jam, but the sweet potato is definitely the star of the show here. I love checking the health benefits of the ingredients that I’m using, so let’s look at what sweet potatoes can offer us.

Where Can I Use the Sweet Potato Jam?

1. On bread as Jam

As the name implies, yes! Use the sweet potato jam as you would with jam. In the clip I shared with you, Sang-hoon shows how sweet potato jam is used to fill the bread.

2. As a Filling in Sweet Potato Dumplings

You can fill the dumplings with sweet potato jam here with some corn and cheese, and you will have these popular Korean sweet potato dumplings! I used simple mashed sweet potato with the remaining ingredients, but you can replace it with this jam. You will have even better gourmet dumplings.

Easy Korean Cheese Corn Sweet Potato Dumpling Recipe

Started from a Korean cooking program on TV, the sweet potato dumpling recipe became so popular! Sweet, savory, creamy, and cheesy with a touch of crunchiness.

3. Spread on a Sandwich

You can also use the jam as a spread on a savory sandwich. The soft and sweet flavor of the sweet potato can go so well with the sandwich. On top of that, you can even skip buttering your sandwich because there is butter in the spread already. Yum!

How to Store Sweet Potato Jam

Sweet potatoes can go bad quite easily. Just one or two days out warm at room temperature can make them smell stale. So once you make the jam, please make sure to store them in the fridge. Serve within a few days.

If you think you are going to finish it longer than a couple of days, please store the jam in the freezer. That works well!

Korean Sweet Potato Jam Recipe | Kid-Friendly & Versatile

Korean Sweet Potato Jam

Soft, sweet, creamy, and buttery, this sweet potato jam can be used in many dishes!
Course: Sauce
Cuisine: Korean

Ingredients
  

  • 17 oz Korean/Japanese yellow sweet potatoes 500g, can be substituted with other sweet potatoes
  • 1 cup Milk 225ml, I used oat milk
  • 4 tbsp Sweetened Condensed Milk I used oat condensed milk; see my recommendation above.
  • 2 tbsp Butter I used plant-based
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon powder

Equipment

  • 1 Blender Can be substituted with a stick blender

Method
 

  1. Prepare sweet potatoes. 2 small to medium or one big one would make 17 oz (500 g) of sweet potatoes. Originally, this jam is made with Korean/Japanese yellow sweet potatoes. (You can use other sweet potatoes, but you need to modify the recipe. I will talk about it later in the instruction.)
  2. Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly.
  3. You can cook the sweet potatoes by microwaving the sweet potatoes for 10 minutes. First, poke some holes with a fork through the skin. This allows the steam to leave. Once cooked, peel the sweet potatoes. Or, you can peel the sweet potato skins and cut them into pieces. Steam the sweet potatoes for 20 minutes.
  4. Bring a bowl and add the cooked sweet potatoes when it’s hot. Add butter and mix so the butter melts and it is well incorporated.
  5. In a blender, add the cooked sweet potatoes and the remaining ingredients. I used oat milk and oat condensed milk, as it is comfortable on my stomach, tastes great, and it lasts longer. See my recommendation above.
  6. Blend until smooth and fine, like purée.
  7. Your sweet potato jam is ready! Serve it hot or cold on a piece of bread or use it for other recipes. See my suggestions above. Enjoty!
