Hello, my beautiful readers! I hope you are having a great day today. It’s wonderfully sunny outside here in Oslo, Norway, and I feel blessed just looking out the window and seeing a blue sky with a sun. We get a short period where the sun is shining here up in Norway. Therefore, just having a little bit of sun makes everyone happy. 😄 ☀️ Recently, I started to jog for 5 km with my husband. I could perhaps go for another jog later today. After jogging, I get quite hungry and crave something sweet, cool, and protein-packed. So that’s the topic for today—a protein ube smoothie recipe! This is an easy smoothie you can make with ube, which are the purple yams.
If you are not so familiar with ube, then let me introduce you!
Introduction to Protein Ube Smoothie Recipe
What Is Ube?

Ube, a purple yam native to Southeast Asia, gets its name from the Philippines. It’s a widely used ingredient in Southeast Asian cuisine, featured in popular recipes like ube jam and ube cake.
With its vibrant deep purple hue, ube has a sweeter, more robust flavor than regular yams or sweet potatoes, and its texture is thicker, almost creamy. The taste is so delightful that I used to simply bake it in the oven and enjoy it with a little milk—it made for one of the best snacks I’ve ever had!

Ube Health Benefits
Ube, the purple yam, is not only incredibly sweet and creamy but also packed with nutrients, making it a surprisingly healthy option that can even support weight management. Let’s look at the health benefits of incorporating ube into your diet.
- Rich in antioxidants: The vibrant purple color of ube is a sign of its high antioxidant content, including anthocyanins (also found in grapes), which help protect the body from aging and oxidative stress.
- Supports blood sugar control: With a low glycemic index (GI) of 24 out of 100, ube causes a gradual rise in blood sugar, making it a great option for managing blood sugar levels while storing fewer calories compared to other starchy vegetables.
- Aids in weight management: Ube is high in fiber, which helps you feel full for longer after eating. This makes it a popular choice for people looking to manage their weight, much like yams and sweet potatoes.

Ingredients
Equipment
Method
- 1. Steam Method: Prepare a steamer. Steam the purple yam for 40 minutes.
- 2. Oven-Bake Method: Poke a few holes in the yam skin. Bake the purple yam in the oven at 390°F or 200°C for 40 minutes. Bake for 10 more minutes if your yam is thick and round.
- 3. Microwave Method: Poke a few holes in the yam skin. Microwave the yam for 10 minutes. Take it out and poke a hole through the yam to see if it is cooked. If it doesn’t go through smoothly, microwave for another 5 minutes until the yam is cooked and soft.
- You could remove the skin of the yam if you want. I prefer using the skin too because it has a lot of nutrition. And we will blend it so you won’t feel the skin.
- In a blender, add all the ingredients. Blend until smooth.
- Remove the smoothie from the blender and store it in the fridge to keep it cold. Serve when the smoothie is cold. Enjoy!
Variations of Protein Ube Smoothie Recipe
You can personalize this protein ube smoothie to your liking. Experiment with it yourself too, but here are some of my suggestions.
1. Opt out protein powder for WFPB
If you want a WFPB (whole food plant-based) diet, then you can simply take out the protein powder from this recipe. It still goes great; it will just be slightly less thick and more drinkable!
If you love the thicker consistency of smoothies, then perhaps you can add cocoa powder instead of protein powder. Let me explain.
2. Add Cocoa Powder
Ube and cocoa flavors go surprisingly well together. The sweet taste and creamy texture of ube enhance the deep, earthy flavor of cocoa, making it taste like chocolate. What’s more, cocoa powder is one of the ingredients with the highest amount of antioxidants that is found on this planet. So if you are a chocolate-lover like me, then consider adding a tablespoon of cocoa powder.
3. Add Wild Blueberries
You can add just a tiny bit of wild blueberries—a tablespoon of wild blueberries would do. Blueberries are a little sour and fruity, so just a bit goes a long way.
Wild blueberries are also extremely nutritious, and they can add more purple color to the ube smoothie. Adding just a little bit of wild blueberries to the ube smoothie makes the smoothie more gorgeous and nutritious!
