Hello, my beautiful people! Are you having a great day? I am. I’m here today with another latte recipe that can brighten your day even more: the ube latte! I wrote my Korean sweet potato latte recipe here on my blog before, and this Ube latte recipe is like a cousin to the sweet potato latte. But certainly, it’s not exactly the same!

So let’s learn a little about what this ube latte is and why it’s getting more and more popular in recent years!

Introduction to Ube Latte Recipe

What is Ube?

Ube is a purple yam that originated in Southeast Asia, and the word “ube” is from the Philippines. Purple yam is a popular food ingredient in Southeast Asia, and you can find many recipes using ube, such as ube jam, ube cake, and my protein ube smoothie.

Ube has a beautiful deep purple color and tastes sweeter and stronger than regular yams or sweet potatoes. It also has a thicker consistency than yams and almost feels creamy. Ube tastes so good that I used to oven-bake it and just eat it with some milk. It made one of the best snacks ever!

What is Ube Latte?

Milk and Ube go so incredibly well together. So when I learned that there is an ube latte recipe, I thought it was genius! It is quite similar to a Korean sweet potato latte, and I also mentioned in my recipe post that you could make a sweet potato latte with a purple sweet potato. So what’s the difference between the ube latte and the sweet potato latte?

This ube latte has some coffee in it, and we won’t be using spice as we do with the sweet potato latte. The different ingredient combinations make interesting and different flavors from each other. So if you liked the sweet potato latte, then you would love this ube latte. And vice versa, if you like this ube latte, you would like the sweet potato latte!

Ingredients for Ube Latte Recipe

There are essential main ingredients for the Ube latte, as well as other add-ons you can include to upgrade your Ube latte.

Main Ingredients for Ube Latte

  • Ube (purple yam): You might be able to find Ube at an Asian grocery store. This is the key ingredient to this ube latte!
  • Milk: You can choose any milk of your choice. I chose oat milk for this ube latte recipe.
  • Coffee: Espresso or cold brew can be used for this recipe. Read more about the choice below.
  • Syrup: This ube latte is the best with some sweetener! It accentuates the sweet ube flavor in the ube latte.

Optional Add-Ons

  • Whipped cream: Whip 1/4 cup of cream and add it on top of the ube latte. It’ll make the ube latte so luxurious!
  • Boba: Chewy boba bubbles add a very interesting texture to the ube latte.
  • Almond Slices: The nutty flavor of almonds compliments the ube latte very well.

Hot Ube Latte & Iced Ube Latte

There are two versions of ube latte: the hot one and the iced one. For both ube latte, we will use the same ube mixture and milk for the recipe. The difference

Hot Ube Latte Recipe: Espresso

  • Coffee: Espresso
  • Temperature of ube & milk base: Hot

To make the hot ube latte, we will add espresso to have a stronger taste and scent with some oil extracted with heat and pressure from the coffee beans.

Iced Ube Latte Recipe: Cold Brew

  • Coffee: Cold Brew
  • Temperature of ube & milk base: Cold

Cold brew has been slowly steeped with cold water for a long time, having its unique fresh and mild flavor. Because cold brew coffee hasn’t been heat-treated, it has more nutrients and less caffeine than espresso or filtered coffee.

Now that we know the differences in the recipe, let’s get right into making the ube latte!

Health Benefits of Ube, Purple Yam

Ube, the purple yam, is so incredibly sweet and creamy that it’s almost hard to believe that this plant has many nutrients and can even help with weight management. Here are the health benefits of eating ube.

  • Great amount of antioxidants: The purple color signifies the high antioxidant amount, such as anthocyanins (a type of polyphenol antioxidant abundant in grapes too). They help us to protect our bodies from aging.
  • Blood sugar management: Purple yam has a low glycemic index (GI) of 24 out of 100, which means that it raises blood sugar levels slowly and stores fewer calories from the food. That is a quite low index among other starchy vegetables.
  • Weight management: The high fiber content in ube makes you feel full for a long time after eating it. For that reason, yams and sweet potatoes are the types of foods people on a diet eat!

Expert Tips on Ube Latte Recipe

Use ube extract in the ice or to make the cream. They will be purple with ube flavors.

1. Use Ube Extract

Did you know that there is ube extract? It’s like the essence of ube with the ube flavor concentrated. How do you use it? There are many ways to use this to enhance not only the ube flavor but also the aesthetics by changing things to a gorgeous purple color! A little bit goes a long way, so use it as little as you would with vanilla extract.

  • Ice with ube extract
  • Whipped cream on top with ube extract
  • A teaspoon into the Ube latte for more flavor

🌟 My Choice of Ube Extract 🌟

This ube extract gives a beautiful ube flavor and color at a great price! Use a bit of it in the water and freeze it to make purple ice cubes, or use a few drops in the cream to make the cream a purple color.

Use ube halaya (ube jam) instead of ube to make the ube latte. You might want to decrease the syrup to 1 tablespoon in the recipe, as the ube hayala already contains sweetener.

2. Use Ube Halaya

You can use ube hayala, a Filipino ube jam, instead of using real ube. This is especially more convenient if you can’t find fresh ube at a grocery store nearby. Ube halaya has a longer shelf life than fresh ube and can be stored for a while in the fridge. So once you get some ube halaya, you can make ube latte any time you want more conveniently.

3. Use Instant Coffee Instead

If you are in a rush, you can use instant coffee for both iced and hot ube latte to make this recipe even easier! (Cold-brew coffee needs to be steeped overnight, and you need an espresso machine to make a shot of espresso. Sometimes we just don’t have that, do we? 😁)

Instant coffee has its own “instant coffee-like” flavor, which people might have different opinions about. But even if you don’t like the taste of instant coffee, you might not even notice it. There is a prominent flavor of milk and ube in the ube latte, and the coffee has less significance in the recipe. We still want coffee flavor, but using instant coffee will be a great choice to make a quick and easy Ube latte!
