Mango Gelato Recipe | Healthy Homemade Raw Vegan Dessert

homemade mango gelato recipe

Hello, everyone! I hope you are having a great day today. After my blog post about mango sorbet and mango bingsu, I wanted to share another mango recipe with you all: the mango gelato recipe. Apple mangoes are juicy and fragrant tropical fruit that reminds me a lot of Southeast Asia but Mango gelato has more of an Italian identity to me. I think it’s because it is gelato, which is an Italian frozen treat, and the mango has less prominence in the mango gelato than the mango sorbet or mango bingsu.

I lived in Milan, Italy, for two years and ate my share of gelato there! But just like most traditional frozen treats, gelato also has dairy and egg products that I don’t eat anymore. But that doesn’t stop me from craving gelato, so I had to develop vegan gelato recipes. And now there are many vegan gelato recipes that I cannot wait to share with you all. To start off, it’s this mango gelato recipe.

Let’s get started with this intensely flavorful mango gelato recipe!

There are so many amazing gelato flavors to explore!

What Is Gelato?

Gelato is a type of frozen treat that originated in Italy. Many gelato shops in Italy offer fresh, housemade gelatos.

Characteristics of Gelato

Gelato is known for its dense and smooth texture and rich, intense flavors from the main flavoring ingredients.

Traditional Gelato

Traditionally, gelato is made with milk, sugar, and flavorings. Some custard-based recipes also include egg yolks. Gelato has a dense texture due to a slower churning speed than ice cream so it has less air. This process gives the gelato its iconic dense and creamy texture, which is more intense than regular ice cream. Isn’t it so amazing that the creamy texture isn’t from cream? In fact, traditional gelato usually has little to no cream.

Here’s an easy comparison.

Gelato

  • Whole milk-based (Occasionally egg yolk included)
  • Less air
  • A dense and creamier texture.
  • Low-fat content
  • Stronger taste of flavoring

Ice Cream

  • Cream-based
  • Airy
  • Soft and fluffy texture
  • High-fat content
  • Softer taste of flavoring

Vegan Gelato

After knowing these principles of gelato, I got to brainstorm what to do with my lovely plant-based products to make gelato. Something that can create a dense and creamy texture and intense flavor… I got it!

Let me introduce you to the homemade, fresh vegan mango gelato recipe.

Introduction to Homemade Vegan Mango Gelato

1. Easy and Healthy Ingredients

Welcome to the world of simple and healthy frozen delights. It’s a recipe with simple ingredients, yet it’s so delicious and irresistible. Imagine being able to eat some mango gelato in the comfort of your home without having to fly to Italy! Not to mention, this is vegan and healthy. How did I do it?

Instead of regular milk, I opted for plant milk. In Italian gelatos, some natural stabilizers like guar gum or carob bean gum are used to improve the texture and shelf life.

It also offers a healthier alternative to store-bought desserts. Ripe mangoes bring their natural sweetness and vibrant yellow color, while a touch of lime adds a zesty twist. As you will see in the blog post below, you will find a healthy alternative to regular syrup or sugar to use in the mango gelato recipe. The result is this creamy, luxurious, flavorful mango gelato that is healthy and packed with nutrients.

You really don’t need a lot of equipment to make this delicious mango gelato! Just this Ninja Creami Ice Cream Maker and a blender.

I got my Ninja Creami Ice Cream Maker about a year ago, and needless to say, I use it often and love it! It makes really good ice cream in such a short period of time, but there are some cons to having it, like the pretty big noise it makes. Why You Should Try This Mango Gelato Recipe

1. Raw Vegan and Dairy-Free

Well, first and foremost, this is a raw vegan dessert recipe. Traditional gelato recipes include dairy and, sometimes, eggs. But this recipe makes delicious gelato without using eggs or dairy. You could substitute the plant milk with regular milk if you like, but I hope you give it a try with this recipe that uses oat milk. The natural sweetness from the oats is so mild and beautiful. Using plant milk is especially good for those of you who are lactose-intolerant.

So if you are vegan, lactose-intolerant, or health-conscious, this mango gelato is the perfect dessert for you!

2. Low-Fat, Low-Sugar, Nutrient-Packed Dessert

Gelato has little to no fat in its recipes. So it’s a healthier alternative to ice cream. (But it has a denser and creamier texture than ice cream; how wonderful is that?)

On top of that, I use a healthier alternative to sugar in all my recipes, so this mango gelato recipe contains low sugar.

Last but not least, gelatos have a higher percentage of flavoring ingredients than ice cream. So it has lots of mangoes in the recipe. This mango gelato recipe is low-fat, low-sugar, and packed with nutrients from the mangoes!

3. Italian Mood

Mango is a tropical fruit, but a mango gelato is… a gelato. Biting into this dense and creamy gelato takes me back to my memories of my Italian life.

You would get the mango’s rich, creamy texture, juicy bite, and distinct, aromatic sweetness that resembles apples.

Health Benefits of Apple Mango🄭

I highly recommend using apple mangoes for the mango gelato recipe. The flavor of apple mango is distinct and has a wonderful bright yellow color that stands out. But apple mangoes are not only delicious but also have numerous health benefits. Here are the top 4 health benefits of apple mangoes.

1. High in Dietary Fiber

Apple mangoes are anĀ excellent source of dietary fiber, which means that they are good for digestion and help with regular bowel movements.

2. Rich in Antioxidants

Apple mangoes areĀ rich in antioxidantsĀ like polyphenols and carotenoids, which help protect cells from oxidative stress and keep them young!

3. High Potassium Content

There are many nutrients that mangoes have, but it is worth noting the high potassium content. Our body needs potassium for heart health and to maintain stable blood pressure.

4. Boost Hair and Skin Health

Vitamins A, C, and E in apple mangoes help keep our hair and skin healthy. Many skincare products also contain these antioxidants, but it is also important to incorporate them into our bodies.

Key Ingredients for Best Homemade 3 Ingredients Mango Gelato

1. Monk Fruit Sweetener with Erythritol

To make creamy gelato, you need sugar. But instead of using regular sugar, I recommend using a healthy sweetener that only adds sweetness to bring out the best flavor of the ingredients.

2. Ripe Apple Mango

You can use any mangoes for this recipe, but I prefer to use apple mangoes. Apple mango is a variety known for its exceptionally sweet, juicy, and aromatic flavors that resemble that of a mixture of mango and apple—hence the name. Use fresh, ripe apple mangoes to make this best homemade mango gelato. As the recipe only has a few ingredients (literally three), using a quality ingredient is very important.

3. Limes

I will use some limes in this recipe to maximize the sweet and sour flavors of the apple mangoes.

Not lime juice, but a whole lime! It has more nutrients and fiber than using just juice. Also, I find it easier just to peel the limes and throw the whole lime inside the bowl instead of squeezing the lime juice out.

4. Rolled Oats

This is the secret ingredient in creating the vegan gelato recipe.

Like gelaterias in Italy that use natural stabilizers like guar gum or carob bean gum to improve the gelato texture and shelf life, simple and good ingredients like rolled oats can make the ice cream dense and thick.

Tips for Enjoying Mango Gelato

Coconut Ice Cream Recipe| Inspired by Baskin Robbins Nutty Coconut

Inspired by the Nutty Coconut, this coconut ice cream recipe has three types of nuts. They bring out the sweetness and nutty flavor of the coconut even more.

1. Pair It with Tropical Ice Cream

Pairing complementary flavors of frozen treats is a great way to enjoy them to the fullest.

With the mango frozen treats, I find pairing them with other tropical flavors goes so well together! You could pair it with pineapple sorbet or mango & guava sorbet for a refreshing tropical pairing.

But if you want a contrasting flavor pairing, try my gourmetĀ coconut ice cream recipeĀ which also requires only three ingredients to make!

The coconut ice cream is nutty, rich, and decadent, while fruit frozen treats like a mango gelato are fruity and refreshing. But both of them have wonderful, vibrant tropical flavors. They make the perfect pairing.
