If I had to choose one dessert to eat for the rest of my life, that would be chocolate. I am crazy about anything chocolate. And among all the chocolate desserts, brownies are at the top of my list. Fresh, home-baked brownies served hot right from the oven, that are crispy on the outside, chewy in the middle, and gooey on the inside, they are always the best thing ever. Any chocolate lover would agree with me. But if you have seen the ingredients that go into the traditional brownie recipe, you might be hesitant to eat it. The amount of sugar, oil, and eggs—if you are not into it, yikes! So that’s why I created this vegan protein brownie recipe that is dairy-free, egg-free, and gluten-free!

Introduction to Protein Vegan Brownie Recipe
If you have studied some diet types, you would know that “vegan” means no eggs or no milk. But some people don’t, so I wanted to specify that again in this post. (You would be surprised how many times I get questions about whether I eat eggs or milk as a vegan!)
So here are some of the points about the vegan protein brownie recipe.
- No Allergies: There are a lot of people who have allergies to milk, eggs, or gluten. I wanted to create an allergy-free vegan brownie recipe so anyone could try this. If you are thinking of making brownies after working out, this is a perfect dessert to have with your friends and family! This is a simple recipe without any allergy-prone ingredients, making it so easy to just make it for other people.
- Nutritional, Plant-Based: Also, I didn’t want to use sugar and oil in the brownie recipe. Sugar and neutral oil are vegan, and they are not allergenic to anyone, but they are not healthy. If it is a vegan protein recipe you are looking for, I’m sure you are also looking for a delicious yet healthy recipe. So here it is, a nutritional and plant-based brownie you can have guilt-free!
- Packed with Protein: This recipe has all the high-protein natural ingredients plus protein powder! It is also packed with fiber, keeping you full for a long time.
- Perfect for Kids: Now I have many friends who have children, and they tell me it is very difficult to bake a cake or dessert when there are kids’ parties. Many kids have some sort of allergy, and many parents don’t want their kids to eat sugar. This healthy brownie is perfect to bake for kids and their parties.
Ingredients for Vegan Protein Brownies

[Dry Ingredients]
- Plant-Based Protein Powder
In the brownie recipe, you have more options of protien powder flavors to choose from. I recommend using vanilla flavor for recipes like my protein waffle recipe, because it wouldn’t be so nice to have other flavors mixed in other than vanilla here. I used Orgain Organic Vegan Protein Powder, Vanilla Bean because it has blends of plant protein powder and has nice taste.
You could also use chocolate flavor or coffee flavor. I used chocolate peanut butter protein powder, because that’s what we had at home. But we are adding peanut butter in the recipe, so please choose the vanilla flavor or chocolate flavor for the best taste. 😋
- Oat flour
I used oat flour for the recipe not because I avoid gluten, but because it is whole grains. (Gluten is protein that exists naturally in wheat flour, and so I love gluten!) I could use white flour in the recipe, but it wouldn’t be whole grains that has more nutrients and fiber.
Q. Why don’t you use whole wheat here?
Whole wheat in desserts don’t work so well, because it has very strong nutty and savory flavor. I love using whole wheat so much in a variety of savory recipes though, like my no-knead whole wheat focaccia recipe. As a matter of fact, I almost insist on using whole wheat for savory recipes! But oat flour has neutral taste and that works very well with dessert recipes like this.
- Cocoa Powder
Please make sure to use unsweetened, 100% cocoa powder for the recipe. Good quality cocoa powder makes the brownie so rich in flavors. Oh, yum.
- Baking Powder
We need just a little lift of the batter to make soft and nice chewy and fudgy brownie. Without the baking powder, it could be a little too dense.
- Salt
Just a little bit of salt brings out the sweetness in the brownie here.
- Flaxseed Powder
Flaxseed powder adds more nutrients and protein to the recipe, but that’s not all! It holds the structure of the brownies.

[Wet Ingredients]
- Date Syrup
Did I tell you that this vegan protein brownie recipe has no added sugar, either? There are too many amazing characteristics of the recipe that I am almost forgetting to mention everything about this recipe, whew!
Date syrup has high “sugar content” but it has so many other antioxidants, nutrients, and fiber that regular sugar is missing. That is because date syrup is basically a whole fruit (dates) and water. But it is surprisingly silky, rich in flavor, and extremely sweet! Yes, so get some date syrup and it is one of the healthiest natural sweetener you could find!
- Coffee
Coffee and chocolate go so well together! In many chocolate recipes, there are some coffee added. Coffee eccentuates the flavor of chocolate so well, making the vegan brownie flavorful (and more caffeine 😄). So we will add some coffee in the recipe.
But you know what’s interesting? If you don’t feel like making coffee (I totally feel you. Making fresh coffee after working out to make the protein brownie can feel tiring.) then you can just add instant coffee flakes. That works great too.
- Banana
Use very well-riped bananas for the recipe. It has much nutrients including potassium and natural sweetness.
