Taro Smoothie Recipe with Real Taro | Delicious Protein Drink

easy taro smoothie recipe

Hello, everyone! I hope you are having a great day. For today’s post, I want to introduce you to the taro smoothie recipe. This taro smoothie recipe has a beautiful earthy sweetness and creamy texture that are similar to my ube smoothie recipe. While I was creating both the ube and taro smoothie recipe, I wanted to keep the taro and ube flavor as much as possible. I don’t want to keep you waiting, so should we get right into the introduction to the taro smoothie recipe? Let’s go!

Introduction to Taro Smoothie Recipe

What Is Taro?

Taro is a root vegetable that grows in Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Africa. In these regions, many cuisines use taro. It has a rough brown, hairy exterior and a white interior with some purple spots. When the taro is cooked, it becomes incredibly creamy, soft, mildly earthy, and has an umami flavor.

What Can I Do with Taro?

There are many recipes you can do with taro. The first way to use taro is to use it as you would with potatoes, such as stir-fry, stew, soup, and fritters. The second way to use taro is to use it as a dessert ingredient, such as taro mochi, taro milk tea, and taro ice cream.

What is your favorite way to use taro? I’m from South Korea, so taro is an exotic ingredient for me. So if you are from a country where taro is used often in cuisine, please let me know! I’d love to learn more about this beautiful ingredient. 😋

The Taro Smoothie Recipe

This taro smoothie recipe is easy to make with a few ingredients that focus on emphasizing the characteristics of taro: the creamy texture, mild earthy scent, and soft nutty flavor.

So what are the ingredients for this taro smoothie?

Taro Smoothie Ingredients

Here are the taro smoothie ingredients we are going to use.

  • Cooked taro*: The star of this smoothie! Creamy, nutty, and a great soft base for a smoothie
  • Sunflower seeds: Vitamin E for skin health and enhances the nutty flavor of taro
  • Oats: Super filling with fiber and other nutrients. Also acts as a thickener
  • Banana: Natural sweetener that goes well with taro
  • Soy milk: Umami flavor with healthy protein & fats
  • Allulose syrup*: A sweetener with lots of fiber, see my recommendation below.

*Use Cooked Taro

Please use cooked taro! Raw taro contains calcium oxalate crystals, which decrease calcium absorption and can increase the danger of forming kidney stones. However, the content can significantly decrease when cooked. Also, taro becomes so creamy and nutty when cooked! Using raw taro would be like using raw potatoes. Let’s cook them thoroughly to enhance the nutrition and flavor.

*Allulose syrup

Because taro has a very mild flavor, I recommend using neutral-flavored syrup or sweetener for this smoothie recipe. Also, since this is a smoothie recipe, I wanted to use a healthier sweetener than a regular sweetener. That is the allulose syrup!

This syrup is a plant-based syrup that has much fiber with less simple carbohydrate content, which makes it a healthier alternative to regular syrup or sugar. Allulose is a natural sweetener from plants, and it is very much used in Korean kitchens.

Other Options than Using Real Taro

If you can’t find real taro at your nearby supermarket, there are some easy ways to try this taro smoothie. It’s by using taro powder.

Taro & Ube (Purple Yam) Powder

🌟 My Recommendation 🌟

Suncore Foods Lilac Taro Yam Powder

Check on Amazon

I tried to find some 100% real taro powder without any sugar, and it seemed like there were no good choices. The best alternative I found was taro & ube powder, which you can use for baking, frozen desserts, smoothies, and lattes. Because this powder is taro and ube mixed, it adds a beautiful purple color to the food. (When taro is cooked, although it has some purple spots, it is mostly white.)

Optional Add-Ons for Taro Smoothie

1. Vanilla Extract

Adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract adds so much to the overall flavor of the taro smoothie! Vanilla extract has the warmth and depth that complement this taro smoothie’s earthy and sweet flavor.

2. Toasted Coconuts

If you love some toppings to a smoothie, I recommend using toasted coconuts in the recipe. Both coconuts and taro grow in tropical areas, and their tastes complement each other very well. Also, having something to chew in a smoothie makes you drink the smoothie slower, and, thus, makes you feel full for a long time.

Taro smoothie is a creamy, sweet treat that is so good that it’s hard to believe that this is also healthy! The creaminess of starchy taro combined with the savory flavor of soy milk and syrup enhances the light sweetness of the taro smoothie.
