I got my Ninja Creami Ice Cream Maker about a year ago, and needless to say, I use it often and love it! It makes really good ice cream in such a short period of time, but there are some cons to having it, like the pretty big noise it makes. There are so many amazing gelato flavors to explore!

What Is Gelato?

Gelato is a type of frozen treat that originated in Italy. Many gelato shops in Italy offer fresh, housemade gelatos.

Characteristics of Gelato

Gelato is known for its dense and smooth texture and rich, intense flavors from the main flavoring ingredients.

Traditional Gelato

Traditionally, gelato is made with milk, sugar, and flavorings. Some custard-based recipes also include egg yolks. Gelato has a dense texture due to a slower churning speed than ice cream so it has less air. This process gives the gelato its iconic dense and creamy texture, which is more intense than regular ice cream. Isn’t it so amazing that the creamy texture isn’t from cream? In fact, traditional gelato usually has little to no cream.

Here’s an easy comparison.

Gelato

  • Whole milk-based (Occasionally egg yolk included)
  • Less air
  • A dense and creamier texture.
  • Low-fat content
  • Stronger taste of flavoring

Ice Cream

  • Cream-based
  • Airy
  • Soft and fluffy texture
  • High-fat content
  • Softer taste of flavoring

Vegan Gelato

After knowing these principles of gelato, I got to brainstorm what to do with my lovely plant-based products to make gelato. Something that can create a dense and creamy texture and intense flavor… I got it!

So in this peanut butter gelato recipe, you can easily swap the regular milk with plant milk to make the gelato recipe vegan.

Benefits of Homemade Peanut Butter Gelato

1. Using Quality Ingredients

One of the best things about making something homemade is being able to use quality ingredients. We don’t mess up with ingredients!

I am particular about what I use, like using pure organic peanut butter. You can read more about my recommendation below.

2. High-protein, Low-Sugar Dessert

Peanuts are a great source of protein, which is crucial for muscle repair and growth after workouts.

Also, instead of using regular sugar or syrup, I opted for date syrup. That makes this gelato high in nutrients and fiber. Read more about date syrup below.

3. Can Be Made Vegan: Dairy-Free and No Eggs

Traditional gelato recipes include dairy and, sometimes, eggs. But if you want to make the gelato dairy-free, you can simply swap the regular milk with plant milk. I also added oats for a creamy texture in gelato instead of using eggs or guar gum.

So if you are vegan, lactose-intolerant, or health-conscious, this gelato is the perfect dessert for you!

4. Italian Mood

Biting into this dense and creamy gelato takes me back to my memories of my Italian life. So hop onto this Italian culinary trip with me!

How to Find Good Peanut Butter

1. Look for 98–100% Peanuts

Look for peanuts with 100% peanuts as ingredients. Some peanut butter with a little bit of salt added is okay. These are packed with flavors, nutrients, and protein, which will make the peanut butter gelato rich in both flavor and texture.

2. No Added Sugar or Oil

So if we are looking for peanut butter that is made with only peanuts or a little bit of salt, that means no added sugar or oil. This gelato recipe will add sweetness, so avoid peanut butter that has added sugar or oil.

3. Get Organic If Possible

I know it’s not always easy to find organic peanut butter with mostly peanuts. But if you can find it, it’s the best. Peanuts are one of the “dirty crops” that use lots of pesticides to grow, so there might be some pesticide residue on non-organic peanuts. Also, organic crops are better for the ecosystem!

4. Roasted Peanuts

In this case of peanut butter gelato, get the peanut butter with roasted peanuts for a deeper and nuttier flavor.

Here are my product recommendations for peanut butter.

This peanut butter is the one! Peanut butter is accused of being a bad food, but it only applies to peanut butter with added sugar and oil. Pure peanut butter with peanuts and only some added salt like this is a great source of protein and extremely filling for you.

2. Date Syrup

We all know that sugar and syrup are not very good for you. But sugar in dates is different. First of all, dates have a lot of fiber and other antioxidants and nutrients. Compared to cane sugar, which only has simple sugar that spikes up your blood sugar, dates are a whole fruit.

And date syrup is made out of whole fruit, dates, so it still has all the benefits of eating dates too. They taste so amazing as well! The date syrup not only sweetens but also goes so well with the rest of the ingredients here. Yummy!

Tips for Enjoying Peanut Butter Gelato

The pear sorbet goes so well with the peanut butter ice cream!

1. Pair It with Pear Sorbet

When I have my guests over, I like to pair the peanut protein ice cream or this peanut butter gelato with some pear sorbet. They really go well together. The nutty, thick, and heavy taste of peanut butter and protein is washed away by the fresh and sweet flavor of the pear sorbet.

To enjoy peanut butter gelato to the fullest, pair it with pear sorbet and sprinkle some chopped peanuts on top.

2. Salty Caramel Syrup on Top

The salty caramel and the sweet peanut butter flavor are a match made in heaven. Elevate the peanut butter gelato with some salty caramel syrup on top! I also love using date syrup on top, as I recommended above.

Summary of Peanut Butter Gelato Recipe

I hope you enjoyed this blog post about the peanut butter gelato recipe! As peanut butter already has creaminess, richness, and smoothness, it is a great frozen treat base to work with. And with the amazing nutritional value of peanuts, this is a great guilt-free summer treat.
